CURRENT RECOMMENDATION
U2's latest album, All That You Can't Leave Behind, returns to the true rock sound of earlier U2 and away from the electronic experimentation of their last 3 albums. Highly recommended! (11/06/00) OBSERVATIONS
The Rise of Oregon State University
(11/07/99)
I watched history happen yesterday. The OSU Beavers beat Cal 17-7 in a tense football game that earned us our first winning season in 28 years.
I arrived in Corvallis early in the morning and already you could feel the excitement in the community. Fresh off a win against WSU on the road last week, confidence was high and pride was glowing. A sell-out crowd and Dad's Weekend ensured a huge audience.
And we were not disappointed. The defensive efforts of both teams were outstanding and neither team could break through. As the fourth quarter began, the score was 2-7.
But a huge play late in the third changed that. In the first seconds of the fourth, the Beavers capitalized on a Cal fumble and ran it back for a touchdown. The score was now 8-7 and the crowd was fired up. A two point conversion made it 10-7. When Cal took possession of the ball again, I said to my sister, "I wouldn't want to be Cal right now. You're surrounded by 35,000 passionate Beaver fans and facing a team that wants to make history...."
